Up a Hill

Once upon a time...

The final semester of the final year. It seemed as though all possible applicants for the job of lifetime companion were taken. However, Jack was told that he desperately needed a partner in his life. Along came Jill.

Setting aside the absurd coincidence of name, Jack and Jill were not a “couple”. They were like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle that had been minced by a pair of scissors. They did not fit together. None of this mattered however, Jack and Jill were both told that they were to find everlasting love, and so they fell into each other's lives.

They did not care about each other. They felt indifferent. There was no love or hate, there was barely even a relationship. They went on a few dates with some friends before they decided that they should put a label on themselves. Boyfriend and girlfriend. They liked the way that would make them sound. It was a label not everyone could have. It meant that they no longer had to feel so alone… or so they liked to think. They should have realized from the beginning that they were wrong for each other. Their love was forced like a nail through a coffin.

One night however, the two reached a point in their relationship that they had both been waiting for. A “special” night. A night that had justified the continuation of the relationship for the two. They both snuck out of their homes, and met up at a mutual friend’s house. They carried on with their action, finished the deed, and came back to their residences still remaining indifferent towards each other. As hard as they had tried, their feelings had not changed.

A few days later, the mood had shifted. Jack and Jill had made a mistake that night. It seemed that the two were going to be having a little “Jack Jr.”. To say this was bad news for Jack and Jill would be an understatement. This was not part of Jill’s plan. She was off to college in less than five months. She did not want to raise a child, especially with Jack.

Jack tried his hardest to find a solution to this issue, but Jill knew there was no way around it. They were each being forced to raise a child with a person they did not care for. The rest of the pair’s life would be controlled by the fate of the universe. A simple mistake and their future was rewritten.

When they looked into each other’s eyes, all they saw was a mistake.

Jack and Jill went up the hill to find their heart a partner

Jack fell down and seemed to drown

And Jill fell even harder

Jack and Jill looked at their parents and understood that true love was real. They were ashamed that they hadn’t found it.

They took weekly visits to a clinic to monitor Junior’s health. Neither of them had a car, so they were forced to take a bus.

Jack and Jill wouldn’t feel so ill, if only they were smarter

Jack now frowns and feels oh so very down

And Jill is his saddened partner

They didn’t even enjoy each other’s company, and so they sat in opposite rows during their transportation to and fro.

The baby looked perfectly healthy in the ultrasounds and was now expected to arrive within a month’s time.

Great news.

They entered the same bus that they had been on an infinite amount of times before, and they sat in opposite rows once again.

What a life this was shaping up to be.

As they rested their heads on the frosty windows, they began to realize that this had become their fairytale ending, and they lived sadly forever after.

THE END
